Plastic Packaging Tax Set To Come In To Effect 1st April 2022

From the 1st of April 2022 a compulsory plastic packaging tax go in to effect, HMRC (Her Magesty’s Revenue & Customs) has announced. The legislation is due to go ahead with the aim to reduce single use plastic pollution and the reduction of plastic packaging components that have less than 30% recycled plastic. The Legislation states:

 If you manufacture or Import 10 or more tonnes of plastic packaging within a 12 Month period, you may need to register for the tax.

The huge announcement is intended to tackle plastic pollution and is specifically aimed at Manufacturers and importers of 10 or more tonnes of finished plastic and plastic packaging components within a 12 Month period. The legislation is enforced by HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs) are targeted at Plastic packaging importers who import and (or) manufacture Plastic components to help promote sustainable research and implementation of taking a sustainable route to packaging.

The tax is set to come in to force on the 1st April 2022, the tax will be £200 per tonne. This legislation should have the ability to become a catalyst to bring in change of structure and practice from Manufacturers, Importers and the Retail Sector as well as to ignite the need to find sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging. Plastic sauce bottles alone equate to hundreds of millions of bottles worldwide and with majority of these bottles being single use plastics, the ramifications of their use are evident with the adverse & detrimental effects on the environment and endanger to marine life. Stringent measure as the aforementioned legislation is certainly a step in the right direction to a plastic free nation and possibly a catalyst for change worldwide.
